Zurrgurte

Zurrgurte, also known as tie-down straps or ratchet straps, are devices used to secure cargo during transport. They consist of a woven webbing strap, typically made of polyester, with metal fittings at each end and a tensioning mechanism, usually a ratchet. A cam-buckle version is used for lighter loads. Zurrgurte are designed to prevent shifting, tipping, or sliding of goods on trucks, trailers, ships, and other conveyances.

Construction and variants: The webbing width commonly ranges from about 25 to 50 millimeters, with lengths varying to suit different loads. End fittings include flat hooks, J-hooks, hooks with sleeves, and sometimes chain attachments. The ratchet mechanism allows controlled tightening and locking of the strap, while some lighter straps rely on a cam buckle for tensioning. Materials are chosen for strength, UV resistance, and low stretch; polyester is the predominant choice due to its durability and minimal elongation under load. Some lighter or inexpensive straps use polypropylene, which is less resistant to wear and UV exposure.

Standards, labeling, and inspection: Zurrgurte are usually labeled with their working load limit (WLL), length, material, and manufacturing date. They should comply with regional standards and regulations for load restraining devices. Before each use, inspect for fraying, cuts, reduced stitching, damaged hooks, or corrosion. After a load event or visible damage, or after a certain period of use, straps should be retired and replaced.

Usage and safety: When securing loads, place straps over sturdy, non-slip points and use edge protection for sharp edges. Route straps to avoid twisting, use multiple straps for long or wide loads, and tighten with the ratchet to achieve adequate tension without overloading the strap. Do not use damaged, dirty, or wet straps, and store them in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight. Regular maintenance and proper training are essential for safe operation.
