Zuidkants

Zuidkants is a hamlet situated in the central Netherlands within the municipality of Veldhoven, province of North Brabant. The settlement occupies a latitude of approximately 51°34′N and longitude 5°20′E, and lies about two kilometres northeast of the town centre of Veldhoven. It is part of the wider Zuidkants municipality, which historically formed a segment of the still extant polder that was reclaimed in the late Middle Ages.

The origins of Zuidkants date back to the 13th century, when the area was first recorded in royal charters as a peat-cutting district. During the 17th and 18th centuries the hamlet grew modestly on the basis of dairy farming and small-scale horticulture, and a Catholic chapel built in 1721 became a community focal point. In 1848 a turnpike running between Eindhoven and Uden was paved through the hamlet, connecting it to the wider road network. The local railway station, which opened in 1883 on the now-defunct Eindhoven–Uden line, fostered brief industrial activity but was closed in 1950 due to low passenger numbers.

Today Zuidkants hosts a population of roughly 120 residents. Its economy remains rooted in mixed agriculture, with a few artisans and a family-run windmill that doubles as a tourist attraction. The neighbourhood is served by bus line 23, connecting it to Veldhoven and Eindhoven each weekday. The Dutch National Monuments Register lists the 18th‑century chapel and the 19th‑century water mill as protected structures, and Leiden University maintains a small field station in the vicinity for limnological research.
