Zugbahn

Zugbahn is a German term for the trajectory or path of a moving object. It denotes the spatial curve traced by the position of a particle or body as a function of time under the influence of forces. The concept is used across physics, engineering and related fields to describe how an object moves from its initial state to its later positions.

In classical mechanics, the form of a Zugbahn depends on the applied forces and the chosen frame of reference. A free particle moves along a straight line; a particle under a central force follows a conic section, such as an ellipse, parabola or hyperbola, with the exact shape determined by energy and angular momentum. In gravitational problems, bound motion typically yields elliptical orbits, while unbound motion yields hyperbolic trajectories, with the parabolic case representing a limiting transition.

In accelerator and beam physics, the Zugbahn of charged particles is studied as they pass through magnetic and electric fields. The Lorentz force governs their motion, and the trajectory is shaped by elements such as dipole and quadrupole magnets. Beam optics uses mathematical tools like transfer matrices and numerical tracking to predict and optimize the path of particle beams through complex beamlines and detectors.

In related contexts, the term can extend to the path of objects in other force fields or to the spacetime worldline of an object in relativity, where the trajectory is described in four dimensions rather than merely as a spatial curve.
