Zuckerbausteine

Zuckerbausteine is a German term that translates to "sugar building blocks" or "sugar cubes." In its most common context, it refers to small, pre-portioned cubes of refined sugar, typically sucrose. These cubes are a convenient way to measure and dispense sugar for use in beverages like coffee or tea. They are formed by compressing granulated sugar, often with a small amount of binder, into a cube shape. The typical size of a sugar cube is about 1.5 cm on each side.

Historically, sugar was sold in large cones or loaves and had to be broken off and granulated manually. The invention of the sugar cube in the 19th century, particularly credited to Eugen Langen in Germany, revolutionized sugar consumption by offering a more hygienic and easily manageable form. Sugar cubes are produced industrially through a process of pressing damp sugar granules together. They dissolve relatively quickly in hot liquids, releasing their sweetness. While sugar cubes are still widely used, especially in European countries, granulated sugar and sugar packets have also become popular alternatives.
