Zsolnay

Zsolnay is a Hungarian ceramics and porcelain manufacturer based in Pécs. Originating as a family workshop in the 19th century, it was founded by Miklós Zsolnay and grew into a leading European producer of decorative porcelain and art pottery. The company became renowned for its innovative glazes and artistic collaboration, contributing to the development of Hungarian applied arts during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

One of Zsolnay’s most distinctive contributions is the eosin glaze, a vivid red and iridescent effect achieved through a specialized glaze technology developed by Vilmos Zsolnay. The firm also produced a wide range of wares, including dinnerware, vases, figurines, and large-scale architectural ceramics. Zsolnay wares decorated numerous buildings in Hungary and abroad, helping to define the Hungarian Art Nouveau and Secession movements. The works were exhibited internationally and earned recognition at European exhibitions of the era.

The 20th century brought political and economic changes, including nationalization after World War II and later restructuring. Following the end of communism, the brand underwent privatization and revival. Today, Zsolnay operates as a modern producer of fine porcelain and ceramic art, maintaining its historic production site in Pécs and offering museum-scale works alongside contemporary tableware and architectural ceramics. The Zsolnay Cultural Quarter in Pécs preserves the factory’s legacy, hosting exhibitions, workshops, and a focus on the company’s role in Hungarian decorative arts.
