Zinkwit

Zinkwit, commonly referred to in English as zinc white, is a white pigment used in paints, coatings, ceramics, and plastics. Its principal component is zinc oxide (ZnO). Zinc white is typically produced by calcining zinc carbonate minerals to ZnO or by modern high-temperature oxidation of zinc metal, which yields a fine, relatively pure zinc oxide powder.

Properties of zinc white include high brightness and opacity, a cool undertone, and good lightfastness. It has a lower tinting strength than some other white pigments, such as titanium dioxide, and its hiding power can vary with media and particle size. Zinc white is relatively chemically stable in many pigment formulations and forms stable films in oil and acrylic binders, though it can react with strong sulfur-containing compounds in some environments, potentially causing slight color changes.

Applications of zinc white span traditional painting and modern coatings. It is used in oil and acrylic paints, as well as in watercolors where higher opacity and longevity are desired. It also serves as a whitening agent in ceramics glazes, plastics, rubber, and some printing inks. In cosmetics and skincare, zinc oxide, a closely related compound, is used in approved preparations, though zinc white pigments in cosmetic products are subject to regulatory limits.

Safety and handling considerations center on dust exposure, which can irritate the respiratory tract. Zinc oxide and zinc white powders are generally regarded as less toxic than lead-based whites, but proper ventilation and protective equipment are advised during handling and processing. Disposal should follow local regulations for inorganic pigments.
