Zementäre

Zementäre is a geological term used primarily in German-language literature to describe rocks whose grains are bound together by mineral cement formed during diagenesis. The adjective zementär denotes cemented or cementitious rocks, and it is commonly applied to sedimentary rocks that owe their cohesion to pore-fluid–derived cements rather than interlocking crystalline frameworks.

Formation and types: Cementation occurs as mineral-rich fluids migrate through sediments and precipitate cementing minerals in the pore spaces between grains. The most common cements are calcite, silica (including microcrystalline quartz or opal), and iron oxides, but other minerals can also act as cements. The resulting cementation reduces porosity and permeability while increasing strength and rigidity. Cementation can occur early in diagenesis, soon after deposition, or later under deeper burial and higher temperatures and pressures.

Characteristics and implications: Zementäre rocks display textures and porosity patterns that reflect the type and distribution of cement, which influence mechanical properties and fluid flow. Calcite-cemented sands, for example, tend to be firm and less porous, whereas silica-cemented sands can be particularly hard and durable. The presence and maturity of cement influence reservoir quality in hydrocarbon systems and the permeability of aquifers, soils, and rock under geological and engineering considerations.

Examples and usage: Commonly discussed examples include zementäre Sandstein (cemented sandstone) and zementäre Konglomerat (cemented conglomerate). The concept also applies to carbonate rocks where cementation binds loose carbonate grains, affecting strength and diagenetic evolution. In practice, recognizing zementäre lithologies helps interpret burial history, fluid history, and resource potential.
