Zeitdifferenz refers to the difference in time between two locations on Earth. This difference is primarily caused by the Earth's rotation on its axis, which causes different parts of the planet to face the sun at different times. As the Earth spins from west to east, locations to the east experience sunrise and sunset earlier than locations to the west.

To standardize timekeeping, the world is divided into time zones. These zones are generally based on lines of longitude, with each zone typically spanning 15 degrees of longitude. Theoretically, this creates 24 time zones, each one hour apart. However, political and geographical boundaries often lead to deviations from these standard zones.

The prime meridian, which passes through Greenwich, London, is the reference point for Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). All other time zones are expressed as an offset from UTC. For example, New York City observes Eastern Standard Time (EST), which is UTC-5 during standard time and UTC-4 during daylight saving time.
