Zarpeaks

Zarpeaks is a mountain range in the northern reaches of the fictional continent of Aldoria, extending roughly 280 kilometers along a northwest-southeast axis. The range contains hundreds of jagged summits and knife-edged ridges, with Stormspire as its highest peak at 3,407 meters. The name Zarpeaks appears in regional toponyms and is used to refer to the chain as a whole as well as its most notable spires.

Geology and physical geography: The range was formed during late tectonic collisions between microplates in the Mesozoic, with uplift of metamorphic rocks and granitoids. Erosion and ancient glaciations carved serrated crests, cirques, and hanging valleys, producing several glacial lakes and iconic features such as the Three Pillars and the Needle Wall.

Climate and ecology: Zarpeaks experiences a subalpine climate at lower elevations and an alpine climate at higher altitudes, with long, snowy winters and short, cool summers. Snow persists on north-facing slopes into late spring. Flora includes cushion plants, mosses, and hardy alpine species; fauna includes the Aldorian ibex, snow leopard-like predators, and golden eagles. Endemic species have adapted to the extreme environments.

Human activity and conservation: Permanent settlement is scarce; the range is a destination for mountaineers and scientists. The Zarpeaks National Reserve was established to protect habitats, protect watershed areas, and regulate tourism. Access is typically by permit with seasonal restrictions.

Cultural and research significance: Local folklore associates Zarpeaks with ancient transit routes and meteorological omens. The range is used for climate and paleoclimate studies, glaciology research, and biodiversity surveys, contributing to regional conservation planning.
