Yugoslavias

Yugoslavias is a plural term used in historical and political discourse to refer to possible or historical forms of the state of Yugoslavia, as well as to communities and identities linked to the Yugoslav idea. It does not denote a single current political entity.

Historically, Yugoslavia referred to states formed in the 20th century—the Kingdom of Yugoslavia (1918–1941) and the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (1945–1992)—that united South Slavic peoples within a single political federation. The breakup during the early 1990s produced successor states: Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, and North Macedonia, with Kosovo declaring independence in 2008. In political debates, “Yugoslavias” has been used to describe proposed or hypothetical federations that would revive some form of Yugoslav unity, as well as to reference broader regional ties among the former republics. These ideas have varied in scope and have been more prominent at different times, often receding as member states pursued independent trajectories and European integration.

In cultural contexts, Yugoslavias can denote the shared South Slavic heritage, including common languages that historically formed the basis of Serbo-Croatian continua and cultural productions that span multiple successor states. The term also persists in diaspora communities that maintain elements of a Yugoslav identity, despite national borders and political changes. Contemporary discussions typically emphasize regional cooperation within the Western Balkans rather than a revived state.
