Ympäristökerrokset, known in English as environmental layers or environmental strata, refers to the distinct horizontal or vertical divisions within a landscape that exhibit different ecological characteristics. These layers are formed by a combination of geological, climatic, and biological factors, creating unique habitats and influencing the distribution of flora and fauna.

The formation of environmental layers can be a result of topography, such as altitude or aspect, which affects temperature, sunlight, and precipitation. For example, higher elevations often feature different plant communities and animal life compared to lower valleys due to cooler temperatures and different soil conditions. Similarly, the south-facing slopes of a hill may receive more sunlight and be drier than north-facing slopes, leading to distinct vegetation types.

Water bodies also create environmental layers. The littoral zone of a lake, the open water pelagic zone, and the deep benthic zone each support different aquatic organisms adapted to specific light, oxygen, and nutrient levels. Coastal areas can exhibit layers from the intertidal zone, exposed during low tide, to the subtidal zone, continuously submerged.

Human activities can also create or modify environmental layers. Agricultural fields, urban areas, and managed forests represent artificial layers with altered ecological processes compared to natural landscapes. Understanding these environmental layers is crucial for conservation efforts, land management, and ecological research, as it helps in recognizing biodiversity patterns and the interconnectedness of ecosystems.
