In the southern hemisphere, the situation is reversed: surfaces facing north receive the most sun, while south-facing surfaces generally receive less solar exposure and cooler conditions. The term is commonly used in architecture, landscaping, and real estate.

For buildings, south-facing elements are central to passive solar design, daylighting, and solar energy strategies. Designers place living rooms, courtyards, or conservatories on the south side to capture winter sun. They may employ thermal mass, high-performance glazing, and shading devices to balance heat gain and glare. South-facing gardens or courtyards are often chosen to maximize sun exposure for plants in temperate climates.

Advantages include increased natural lighting, potential for passive heating, and higher solar energy yield for PV arrays. Drawbacks include overheating during hot seasons without adequate shading, glare, and higher cooling loads in warm climates. The effectiveness of a south-facing surface depends on latitude, climate, roof pitch, and building envelope performance.
