Yläpesukoneita, also known as top-loading washing machines, are a common type of laundry appliance. Unlike front-loading machines, the user adds clothes through a lid located on the top of the unit. The washing mechanism typically involves an agitator in the center of the drum or an impeller at the bottom, which moves the clothes through the water and detergent.

There are two main types of top-loading machines. Traditional models use a central agitator, a tall spindle with fins, to move clothes. High-efficiency (HE) top-loaders, on the other hand, use a low-profile impeller or a wash plate at the bottom of the drum to create a more gentle washing action. HE models generally use less water and energy than traditional agitator models.

Top-loading machines are often favored for their ease of use, as users do not need to bend down to load or unload laundry. They also tend to have shorter wash cycles compared to many front-loaders. However, they can sometimes be less gentle on fabrics due to the agitator's action, and some HE models may require specific laundry detergents. Maintenance is generally straightforward, with most accessible for cleaning filters or minor repairs.
