Yleisilmainen or "common currency" is a widely accepted term in economics that refers to a single currency used by multiple countries within a region or across the globe. The concept is often associated with the idea of a unified monetary system where a single currency would replace the need for multiple national currencies. This has been debated and implemented in various forms by different countries and regional economic organizations.

A currency that is widely used across international borders and accepted as a medium of exchange, unit of account, and store of value is often considered a de facto common currency. Historically, use of the gold standard or other commodity-backed currencies, as well as widely traded regional currencies, can be viewed as manifestations of a common currency in the past.

Examples of de facto common currencies include the US dollar in international trade, the euro in European Union member states, and to some extent the Chinese yuan (RMB) in Asia. These currencies are frequently used due to their stability, widespread acceptance, and broad international trade connections.

Implementation of a common currency often requires coordination among participating nations and regulatory bodies. This entails standardization of financial policies, tax structures, and regulations to ensure consistency and predictability. Success of a regional currency often elicits debates on economic sovereignty, contours of global governance, and resistances from emerging economies.

Monetary authorities face these complexities when formalizing agreements on the value and roles of a single currency. Factors like inflation rates, labor productivity, interest rates, and politics generally contribute significantly to the effectiveness of common currency systems.
