Yksifaasijärjestelmä, often translated as single-phase system, refers to an electrical power system that utilizes a single alternating voltage waveform. In such a system, power is delivered through two conductors: a phase wire and a neutral wire. The voltage difference between these two conductors drives the flow of current to power electrical devices. Single-phase power is commonly used in residential and small commercial settings because it is simpler and less expensive to install than three-phase systems.

The voltage in a single-phase system oscillates sinusoidally, meaning it rises and falls periodically. This oscillation is what causes the alternating current (AC) that powers most household appliances. While sufficient for most everyday needs, single-phase systems are generally not suitable for large industrial loads that require more consistent and higher power delivery. The power delivery in a single-phase system also fluctuates throughout the cycle, dropping to zero twice per cycle, which can be a limitation for some sensitive equipment.

In a typical single-phase setup, the phase wire carries the fluctuating voltage from the power source, while the neutral wire provides a return path for the current. The neutral wire is usually connected to ground at the source, providing a safety reference. Common single-phase voltages vary by region, with 120V and 240V being prevalent in North America and 230V common in Europe and many other parts of the world. Understanding the basic principles of single-phase systems is crucial for appreciating the design and operation of electrical distribution networks.
