Yhteispitoisuus

Yhteispitoisuus is a Finnish compound noun formed from yhteinen (shared, joint) and pitoisuus (concentration, density, occupancy). In Finnish usage, the term does not have a single, universally defined meaning; its exact sense is determined by the disciplinary context.

In chemistry and materials science, yhteispitoisuus is commonly used to refer to the overall concentration of components in a multicomponent system—for example the total molar concentration of solutes in a solution, or the cumulative content of substances per unit volume. It contrasts with the concentration of an individual component.

In statistics and informatics, some texts employ yhteispitoisuus to describe the joint concentration of probability mass across several variables, i.e., the joint density or joint distribution. However, this usage is not standardized in Finnish terminology; the standard terms are typically yhteisjakauma for joint distribution and tiheys for density.

In environmental science, agronomy, and analytical chemistry, the term may denote the sum or total concentration of nutrients, contaminants, or other analytes in a sample, especially when reporting multicomponent measurements.

In data management or media studies, yhteispitoisuus can appear as a descriptive label for the density of shared content across datasets or documents, again depending on the author and field.
