Yhteenkytkentävirheistä, known in English as crosstalk, refers to the unwanted transfer of signals between adjacent electrical conductors. This phenomenon occurs in various contexts, most notably in telecommunications cabling, printed circuit boards, and integrated circuits. When electrical signals propagate along a wire or trace, they generate electromagnetic fields. If these fields from one conductor influence the signal in a nearby conductor, crosstalk occurs.

There are two primary types of crosstalk: capacitive coupling and inductive coupling. Capacitive coupling arises from the electric field interaction between conductors. Inductive coupling, on the other hand, is due to the magnetic field interaction. The severity of crosstalk depends on factors such as the distance between conductors, their parallel length, the frequency of the signals, and the dielectric properties of the material separating them.

In telecommunications, crosstalk can lead to degraded signal quality, manifesting as noise, interference, or even complete loss of data transmission. This is particularly problematic in high-speed digital systems and analog voice circuits. To mitigate crosstalk, various design techniques are employed. These include increasing the spacing between conductors, using shielding, implementing twisted pair configurations where adjacent wires in a cable are twisted together, and employing differential signaling. Careful layout and routing on printed circuit boards and integrated circuits are also crucial for minimizing crosstalk and ensuring reliable circuit operation.
