Yhdistelmäaseiden

Yhdistelmäaseiden, often translated as combination guns or drillings, are a type of firearm that incorporates multiple barrels of different types, typically a shotgun barrel and one or more rifle barrels. This design allows a single firearm to be used for a variety of hunting or sporting purposes. The most common configuration is a drilling, which features three barrels, usually two shotgun barrels side-by-side and one rifle barrel underneath. Other variations exist, such as vierlings (four-barrel guns) or simpler two-barrel combination guns.

The advantage of a yhdistelmäase lies in its versatility. A hunter can carry one weapon and be prepared for different game or shooting situations. For instance, a drilling might be loaded with birdshot in the shotgun barrels for small game or fowl, and a centerfire rifle cartridge in the rifle barrel for larger game. This eliminates the need to carry separate firearms, reducing weight and complexity.

The construction of these firearms is often intricate, requiring skilled craftsmanship. The barrels are typically mounted over-and-under or side-by-side, and a common feature is a selector mechanism that allows the shooter to choose which barrel will fire when the trigger is pulled. Historical examples of yhdistelmäaseiden date back to the 19th century, and they remain popular in some European countries, particularly for driven hunts and general-purpose hunting.
