Ydinporaus

Ydinporaus is a Finnish term used to describe borehole drilling conducted to obtain core samples from sub-surface rocks. The word combines ydin (nuclear or core) and poraus (drilling), and it is commonly used in Finnish geology, mining, and nuclear energy discussions. In practice, ydinporaus refers to core drilling projects aimed at studying lithology, rock structure, hydrogeology, and other properties of the host rock.

Techniques and equipment commonly involved include diamond core drilling, which uses a hollow bit to cut a cylindrical rock sample that is retrieved in sections within a core barrel. Drilling may be rotary, percussion, or hybrid. Core logging combines in-field description with laboratory analyses (petrology, geochemistry, dating). Core samples are preserved for future study, and downhole geophysical logging can accompany the operation to gather additional subsurface data.

Applications of ydinporaus span mineral exploration, where it helps identify ore bodies and grade, to geological and hydrogeological research that characterizes bedrock, fracture networks, porosity, and groundwater pathways. In nuclear energy contexts, boreholes are drilled to characterize bedrock for siting and safety assessments of facilities or geological repositories for radioactive waste. Finland’s Onkalo project is a prominent example where deep drilling and rock characterization inform repository design and safety analyses.

Safety and regulation: Drilling programs require environmental permits and adherence to occupational safety standards. Nuclear-related drilling falls under the oversight of authorities such as the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) and other Finnish regulatory frameworks governing operators like Posiva; responsible handling of drill cuttings, borehole logs, and waste is required to minimize environmental and radiological risk.
