YarnDyed

Yarndyed is a term used in textiles to describe yarn that has been dyed before it is woven or knitted into fabric. More commonly written as yarn-dyed or yarn-dyed, yarndyed fabrics are characterized by colors that derive from the individual colored fibers, allowing patterns to emerge from the arrangement of differently colored yarns in the warp (lengthwise) and weft (crosswise) directions. The result can be stripes, checks, plaids, or heathered effects that cross the fabric in predictable geometric or variegated patterns.

Process: In yarn dyeing, fibers are baled into skeins or packages and dyed in baths suitable for their fiber type, then washed, dried, and finished. Dye classes include fiber-reactive dyes for cotton and other cellulose fibers; acid dyes for protein fibers such as wool and silk; disperse dyes for synthetics; and vat dyes for certain fibers. After dyeing, the yarns are spun and woven or knitted into fabric, with color patterns created by using yarns of different colors in the warp and/or weft.

Applications and characteristics: Yarn-dyed fabrics are favored for plaid and striped patterns, fashion knits and woven textiles, and artisanal hand-dyed yarns. Advantages include crisp color patterns and good colorfastness; higher cost and more complex color matching are drawbacks. Care generally follows fiber-specific guidelines to preserve color.

History and usage: Yarn-dyed patterns have a long history in tartan weaving and other regional textiles, where color is locked into the yarn before weaving. In modern production, yarn-dyed fabrics are widely used for apparel, home textiles, and hand-knitted yarns.
