Y2O3 stabilized refers to materials, most commonly ceramics, that have had yttrium oxide (Y2O3) added to improve their structural properties. Yttrium oxide acts as a stabilizer, preventing undesirable phase transformations in the host material, particularly at elevated temperatures. This stabilization is crucial for maintaining the material's integrity and performance under demanding conditions.

One of the most well-known applications of Y2O3 stabilization is in zirconia-based ceramics, such as yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ). Pure zirconia undergoes significant volume changes during heating and cooling cycles due to transformations between its monoclinic, tetragonal, and cubic phases. These volume changes can lead to cracking and material failure. By adding Y2O3, the zirconia can be stabilized in its more desirable cubic or tetragonal phases, even at room temperature. This results in a material with enhanced mechanical strength, fracture toughness, and thermal shock resistance. YSZ is widely used in applications like thermal barrier coatings for jet engines and gas turbines, dental implants, and solid oxide fuel cells.
