Xkromosomi

Xkromosomi is one of the two sex chromosomes in humans and many other animals. The other sex chromosome is the Y chromosome. Females typically have two X chromosomes (XX), while males typically have one X chromosome and one Y chromosome (XY). The X chromosome is larger than the Y chromosome and contains many more genes. These genes are not directly involved in determining sex, but they play crucial roles in a wide range of bodily functions and development.

Because females have two X chromosomes, they have two copies of each gene located on the X chromosome. Males, having only one X chromosome, have only one copy. This difference has significant implications for the inheritance of certain traits and disorders, particularly those linked to genes on the X chromosome. Conditions such as color blindness and hemophilia are more common in males because they only have one X chromosome to express the gene. If that single X chromosome carries the gene for the disorder, they will be affected. Females, with two X chromosomes, would need both copies of the gene to carry the disorder to be affected, or they can be carriers if only one copy is affected.

During reproduction, each parent contributes one sex chromosome to their offspring. A mother always contributes an X chromosome. A father can contribute either an X chromosome (resulting in a female XX offspring) or a Y chromosome (resulting in a male XY offspring). The combination of chromosomes determines the genetic sex of the child. The X chromosome also plays a role in non-sexual traits and development, highlighting its importance beyond sex determination.
