Xilitolo

Xilitolo, also known as xylitol, is a sugar alcohol that occurs naturally in many fruits and vegetables. It is a popular sugar substitute due to its similar sweetness to sucrose but with fewer calories and a lower glycemic index. Xylitol is often used in sugar-free chewing gum, candies, toothpaste, and other products.

The production of xylitol typically involves the hydrogenation of xylose, a sugar derived from hemicellulose found in materials like birch wood and corn cobs. It is metabolized differently by the human body than regular sugar, meaning it does not contribute to tooth decay and has a minimal impact on blood sugar levels, making it a suitable option for individuals with diabetes.

While beneficial for human dental health, xylitol is highly toxic to dogs. Even small amounts can cause a rapid release of insulin in dogs, leading to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Ingesting xylitol can also cause liver damage in dogs. Symptoms of xylitol poisoning in dogs include vomiting, weakness, lethargy, coordination problems, seizures, and collapse. Pet owners should be vigilant in keeping xylitol-containing products away from their canine companions.
