Xenopterus

Xenopterus is a genus of freshwater fish belonging to the family Doradidae, commonly known as thorny catfishes. The genus currently contains only one recognized species, Xenopterus discriminantus. These fish are native to the Amazon basin in South America. Xenopterus discriminantus is characterized by its flattened body, bony armor plates, and prominent barbels around the mouth, which are typical features of doradids. Their coloration is generally mottled brown or gray, providing camouflage in their riverine habitats.

The diet of Xenopterus discriminantus consists primarily of invertebrates and small fish. Like other doradids, they possess an alarm substance in their skin, which is released when they are injured, potentially warning other individuals of danger.
