XPSllä, also known as XPS (Extensible Publishing Structure) paper, is a digital document format developed by Microsoft that closely resembles the appearance and functionality of a printed page. It is designed to preserve the layout, fonts, colors, and other visual elements of a document when viewed on-screen or printed, making it particularly useful for archiving and sharing professional documents.

The XPS format was introduced as part of Microsoft’s Windows Vista operating system and is based on the Open Packaging Conventions (OPC) standard, which underpins formats like Office Open XML. Unlike PDF, which is optimized for document portability and cross-platform compatibility, XPS was initially intended to serve as a native document format for Windows, leveraging the .NET Framework for rendering. However, its adoption remained limited compared to PDF, partly due to the rise of alternative open-source solutions.

XPS files have a .xps extension and can be created using various tools, including Microsoft’s built-in XPS Writer or third-party software. The format supports vector graphics, raster images, and text, allowing for high-quality output. While not as widely supported as PDF, XPS remains relevant in specific enterprise and government applications where strict document integrity is required.

Over time, Microsoft has shifted focus away from XPS, and the format is no longer actively developed. However, it remains a niche option for users seeking a Windows-native alternative to PDF, particularly in environments where compatibility with legacy systems is a concern.
