XMPEXIF

XMPEXIF is a metadata specification that aims to unify XMP and EXIF metadata in digital images. It defines an XML-based schema that supplements the existing EXIF capture data with XMP's extensible description, rights, and provenance metadata. The goal is interoperability across software that reads and writes image metadata.

The specification models data in two layers: a technical layer mirroring EXIF/IFD values (camera settings, exposure, white balance, GPS) and a descriptive layer using XMP-style metadata (title, description, keywords, author, copyright, licensing). It supports namespaces to extend fields without breaking compatibility. XMPEXIF data can be stored as an embedded XMP packet within JPEG/TIFF or as a separate sidecar file; sidescar usage is common in workflows where non-destructive editing is needed.

Adoption and tooling: As a non-official, community-driven proposal, XMPEXIF has varied uptake. Some digital asset management systems and photo editors have begun experimenting with XMPEXIF export/import, and there are validators and sample schemas available in open-source repositories. Compatibility with legacy EXIF and XMP workflows may require mapping between fields.

Limitations and outlook: Because XMPEXIF is not standardized by a major standards body, interoperability depends on agreed-upon namespaces and field mappings, and there is potential for fragmentation. Privacy controls and rights metadata are emphasized to manage personal data and licensing.
