XLPEtä

XLPEtä is a cross-linked polyethylene insulation material used primarily in electrical cables. It forms a three-dimensional network that yields high dielectric strength, improved thermal stability, and mechanical toughness compared with conventional polyethylene.

Production involves cross-linking polyethylene chains after extrusion, creating a network that cannot melt and thus withstands higher temperatures. Common cross-linking methods include peroxide-induced chemical cross-linking and silane-based moisture curing. The cross-linking density determines properties such as temperature rating, flexibility, and resistance to moisture.

Key properties of XLPEtä include high dielectric strength, low dielectric loss, good chemical resistance, low moisture uptake, and superior aging resistance under heat, UV exposure, and environmental factors. Continuous operating temperatures are typically in the range of about 90°C, with higher peak ratings possible depending on grade and standards. The material also offers good abrasion resistance and mechanical robustness, contributing to long service life in demanding installations.

Applications for XLPEtä primarily encompass insulation for power and control cables in underground, exposed, and industrial environments. It is widely used in medium- and some high-voltage cable systems where elevated temperature performance and moisture resilience are important. XLPEtä cables are chosen for reliability, electrical performance, and long service life in challenging operating conditions.

Standards and sustainability considerations: XLPEtä insulation is subject to international standards that cover dielectric properties, thermal aging, and flame retardancy. As a cross-linked material, it cannot be re melted, so recycling is typically more complex and energy-intensive than for thermoplastics; ongoing developments seek improved recyclability and end-of-life options.
