Wryhmäs

Wryhmäs is a municipality and town in the northern coastal region of Northland Province. The municipal seat is the town of Wryhmäs. The area is characterized by dense boreal forest, glacial lakes, and gently rolling hills. As of 2023, the population is about 4,700, with a population density of roughly 25 inhabitants per square kilometer. The official language is Finnish, with Swedish recognized as a minority language.

Geography and environment define much of the municipality. Wryhmäs lies on the southern shore of Lake Varis, within the Varis watershed. The landscape includes protected conifer forests and the Wryhmäs Nature Reserve, covering around 12 square kilometers, which is popular for birdwatching and hiking. The climate is temperate with cold winters and mild summers.

History in Wryhmäs traces back to the early medieval period, when the area developed as a trading node. It gained market rights in the 16th century and was organized as a municipality in 1865. The community expanded in the late 20th century through the incorporation of neighboring rural communes, and retains a strong local identity tied to traditional forestry and farming.

Economy and infrastructure emphasize natural resources and tourism. Forestry and wood processing provide the core employment, supplemented by berry farming and seasonal tourism. The town is served by a regional rail stop and a national road (Highway 8); the nearest international airport is about 70 kilometers away.

Culture, services, and landmarks help define daily life. The cultural calendar centers on the Midsummer Festival and the local museum. Public services include two primary schools and one secondary school, a library, and a community health center. Notable landmarks include the Old Mill and the lakeside promenade along Lake Varis.
