WormholeAttacken

WormholeAttacken refers to a type of security vulnerability that can occur in wireless ad-hoc networks and mesh networks. In such networks, devices communicate directly with each other without a central access point. A wormhole attack exploits this decentralized nature by creating a "wormhole" between two distant points in the network.

An attacker typically uses two nodes, one at each end of the wormhole. These nodes then relay all received traffic between them, often using a low-latency tunnel, effectively creating a shortcut through the network. This shortcut can make the attacker's malicious nodes appear to be adjacent or very close to many other nodes in the network, even if they are physically far apart.

The consequences of a wormhole attack can be severe. Attackers can use it to launch other types of attacks, such as denial-of-service (DoS) attacks, by selectively dropping or delaying traffic. They can also intercept and analyze network traffic, leading to eavesdropping and data theft. Furthermore, the attacker's perceived proximity to other nodes can allow them to manipulate routing tables, redirecting traffic through the wormhole and further compromising network integrity. Detecting and mitigating wormhole attacks is a significant challenge in wireless ad-hoc networking due to the lack of central control and the ease with which malicious nodes can be introduced.
