It encompasses geography, history, cultures, social structures, technologies or magic systems, religions, and the laws of nature as they apply to the imagined world. While many writers and creators use the term worldbuilding, worldcreation is a related or alternative label used in some contexts.

Key components include geography and ecology, historical timelines, political systems and economies, social norms and daily life, language and naming conventions, religion and myth, science or magic rules, technology level, and the interplay between these elements. Consistency and internal logic are central: the rules established for the world should apply across events and characters, with plausible constraints and consequences.

Methods range from extensive outlining to iterative development with maps, timelines, vocabularies, and style guides. A “world bible” or canon document helps track details and prevent contradictions. Collaboration, worldbuilding communities, and tools such as worldcreation software or collaborative wikis are common.

Applications span novels, films, television, role-playing games, and video games, where a well-crafted setting can enhance immersion and dramatic potential. Notable examples include Tolkien’s Middle-earth, Frank Herbert’s Dune universe, and the Star Wars galaxy, among countless fantasy or sci-fi worlds.
