Wonwn

Wonwn is a village situated in the county of Ceredigion, Wales, near the Afon Meillionen valley. The settlement lies at an elevation of approximately 200 metres above sea level and is accessible via a minor lane that connects it to the nearby town of Aberystwyth. Geographic coordinates are 52.2075° N latitude and 4.9489° W longitude. The population recorded in the 2011 Census was 342 residents.

The origin of the name Wonwn is traced to a 19th‑century smelting operation, with archival records noting a forge established in 1825 that processed locally mined copper and tin. The industrial activity continued into the early 20th century until the plant closed in 1932 following resource depletion. The local economy subsequently transitioned to agriculture, with the surrounding hills used for pasture and small-scale orchards. A post‑war period saw an influx of workers from urban areas seeking rural employment, stabilising the population numbers in the mid‑century.

Today, the village features a Methodist chapel built in 1884, a primary school that serves children up to age eleven, and a community hall that hosts agricultural shows and cultural events. The primary source of income remains farming, supplemented by seasonal tourism as walkers and cyclists are attracted to the nearby National Trail. Wonwn is also noted for its conservation efforts aimed at protecting regional wildlife, particularly the native oak and birch species that dominate the local woodland. The village maintains a partnership with a sister community in Scotland, fostering student exchanges and joint environmental projects.
