Wondverband

Wondverband is a sterile material applied to a wound to protect it from contamination, manage moisture, and support the healing process. It acts as a barrier against dirt and bacteria while absorbing exudate and reducing discomfort. The aim is to maintain an appropriate moisture level that can promote cell migration and minimize injury to surrounding tissue.

Types and materials commonly used include simple dressings such as gauze pads or nonwoven absorbent pads; film dressings, which are thin and semi-permeable; hydrocolloid dressings that form a gel as they absorb moisture; hydrogels that add moisture to dry wounds; alginate dressings derived from seaweed for moderate to heavy exudation; and polyurethane foam dressings that provide cushioning and absorption. Some dressings incorporate antimicrobial agents, such as silver or iodine, to help reduce microbial load. Dressings are chosen based on wound type, level of exudate, infection risk, and patient comfort. In some cases, dressings are designed for specific conditions, such as burns or chronic ulcers.

Securement and use: A wondverband is typically held in place with adhesives, tape, or bandages. It is distinguished from Verbandstoffe (bandaging materials) used to secure dressings or provide compression. The choice of securing method depends on wound location, movement, and the desired level of protection.

Care and monitoring: Dressings should be applied under clean conditions and changed according to product instructions or wound status. Change is required when saturated, displaced, or if signs of infection appear, such as increasing redness, swelling, warmth, or foul discharge. Used dressings are disposed of according to local hygiene guidelines.
