Wirbelsäulenabschnitte refers to the distinct regions or segments of the vertebral column in vertebrates. The human spine is typically divided into five main sections. These sections are the cervical spine, the thoracic spine, the lumbar spine, the sacrum, and the coccyx. Each section has a specific number of vertebrae and serves a unique function within the skeletal system.

The cervical spine, located in the neck, consists of seven vertebrae. It provides support for the head and allows for a wide range of motion, including turning and tilting the head. The thoracic spine, comprising twelve vertebrae, is situated in the chest region and articulates with the ribs to form the rib cage, protecting the vital organs of the chest. The lumbar spine, located in the lower back, has five vertebrae and bears the majority of the body's weight, making it a crucial area for posture and movement.

Below the lumbar spine is the sacrum, a triangular bone formed by the fusion of five sacral vertebrae. It connects the spine to the pelvis. Finally, the coccyx, commonly known as the tailbone, is the terminal section of the vertebral column and is typically formed by the fusion of four coccygeal vertebrae. While rudimentary in humans, it represents a remnant of the tail found in ancestral species. The division of the spine into these sections is important for understanding its anatomy, biomechanics, and potential sites of injury or disease.
