Winkelraum

Winkelraum, literally “angle space” in German, is a term used in multiple disciplines to describe a spatial region defined by angular relations rather than by straightforward convex extent. In general, its exact meaning depends on context, and there is no single universal definition.

In mathematics and geometry, Winkelraum can refer to the configuration space of directions around a point or the local angular arrangement at a vertex of a polygon or polyhedron. It is related to concepts such as edge directions, dihedral angles and angular deficit, which measures how the sum of face angles around a vertex deviates from 2π in a three-dimensional polyhedral surface. In this sense, Winkelraum is a way to formalize how space is constrained by angles.

In architecture and interior design, Winkelraum is often used informally to denote the corner volume produced by two intersecting walls or a corner enclosure within a room. Designers consider Winkelraum for issues such as lighting, acoustics, traffic flow, and furniture layout, since corners can become confluences of spatial interaction.
