Wijntypes refers to the classification of wines based on various characteristics. The most fundamental division is between red wine and white wine, determined by the grape varietal used and the winemaking process, specifically whether the grape skins are included during fermentation. Rosé wines are typically made from red grapes with limited skin contact, resulting in a pink hue.

Beyond color, wines are categorized by grape varietal. Popular red varietals include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Syrah/Shiraz, each offering distinct flavor profiles, aromas, and body. White wine varietals such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Pinot Grigio also possess unique characteristics, ranging from crisp and acidic to rich and full-bodied.

Another significant classification is by sweetness level. Wines can be dry, meaning very little residual sugar, or sweet, with varying degrees of sweetness. This is often indicated on the label, with terms like "brut" for dry sparkling wines or "late harvest" for sweeter still wines.

Body, referring to the weight and texture of the wine in the mouth, is another important descriptor. Wines can range from light-bodied, such as a young Pinot Grigio, to full-bodied, like a barrel-aged Cabernet Sauvignon. Acidity contributes to the wine's freshness and can range from high, providing a zesty feel, to low. Tannins, primarily found in red wines and derived from grape skins, seeds, and stems, contribute to a wine's astringency and aging potential. Finally, alcohol content, typically ranging from 5% to 15% or higher, also influences a wine's body and perceived sweetness. Understanding these wijntypes helps consumers choose wines that suit their preferences and occasions.
