Wheals

A wheal is a raised, itchy, and often painful skin lesion that results from an allergic reaction. It is characterized by a smooth, rounded or oval area of raised skin that is typically several centimeters in diameter. Wheals are often seen in people with atopic dermatitis, asthma, or allergies, particularly to insect bites or stings, medications, or certain foods.

Wheals typically develop within a few minutes to an hour after exposure to an allergen. They can be triggered by a variety of substances, including latex, pollen, dust mites, and certain metals. The exact cause of wheals is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve a complex interplay between the immune system, nerves, and blood vessels.

The symptoms of a wheal typically include intense itching, burning, or stinging sensations. Some people may also experience redness, swelling, or warmth in the affected area. Wheals can occur anywhere on the body, but they are most common on the arms, legs, and face. They usually disappear within 24 to 48 hours, but in some cases, they may persist for several days or even weeks.

There is no cure for wheals, but treatment can help alleviate symptoms. Antihistamines, corticosteroid creams or ointments, and avoidance of the allergen can all be effective in reducing the severity of a wheal. In some cases, a wheal may be a precursor to another type of skin lesion, such as hives or angioedema. Medical attention may be necessary if symptoms are severe or persistent.
