West-Vlaams, commonly referred to as West Flemish, is a group of Dutch dialects spoken in the Belgian province of West Flanders. It forms part of the Flemish dialect continuum within the Dutch language family. West Flemish is not an official language; standard Dutch (Algemeen Nederlands) is used in education, media, and formal communication.

Geographic distribution and variation are central to West Flemish. The dialects are strongest in the province’s urban and rural centers and show regional differences, with subdialects associated with places such as Bruges, Kortrijk, and Ieper. Related varieties exist in neighboring areas across the border in French Flanders and, to a lesser extent, nearby Zeelandic communities, reflecting historical cross-border contact.

Linguistic features and status are characterized by distinctive pronunciation, vocabulary, and some syntactic patterns that set West Flemish apart from Standard Dutch. There is no single, universally accepted orthography for the dialect; writers often use spellings that mirror pronunciation or adapt Standard Dutch spelling. In daily life, many speakers switch between West Flemish and Standard Dutch, particularly in formal settings, education, and mass media.

Cultural and historical notes highlight a rich local tradition of storytelling, music, theater, and literature in West Flemish. While its use has declined among younger generations in some contexts, the dialect remains an important part of regional identity and ongoing efforts exist to document and preserve its variety and heritage.
