Werwolf

Werwolf, plural Werwölfe, is the German term for a werewolf, a shapeshifting being from European folklore that is said to transform between human and wolf form. In many traditions the transformation is caused by a curse, magical power, or inherited trait, and in later popular culture the change is often linked to the full moon. Descriptions of the creature vary, but common motifs include superhuman strength and senses, predatory behavior, and vulnerabilities such as silver or magical rites.

Folkloric werewolves appear in many cultures and historical periods, with regional beliefs shaping their characteristics and meanings. Some tales cast werewolves as wholly evil, others present them as tragic or morally complex figures. In modern fiction and film, Werwölfe are depicted with a range of abilities, from voluntary transformation to partial or controlled lupine aspects, reflecting varied storytelling goals from horror to sympathy.

During World War II, Werwolf referred to a Nazi plan for a clandestine resistance after Germany’s collapse. Initiated in 1944, the program aimed to create guerrilla cells capable of sabotage and irregular warfare behind Allied lines. In practice the movement was uneven in scope and impact, and accounts of its effectiveness have been subject to debate and mythologizing.
