Wereldsysteem

Wereldsysteem, also known as world-systems theory, is a multidisciplinary approach to understanding the historical and social development of the global economy and international relations. Developed primarily by sociologist Immanuel Wallerstein in the 1970s, the concept seeks to analyze the structure of the world economy as a single interconnected system, rather than isolated nation-states.

The wereldsysteem is characterized by a core-periphery-semiperiphery model. The core regions are economically developed centers with advanced technological infrastructure, high levels of productivity, and political stability. The periphery consists of less developed areas primarily engaged in primary production, often dependent on exporting raw materials to core regions. Semiperipheral zones serve as intermediate regions, exhibiting characteristics of both core and periphery, and often functioning as buffers or transitional areas.
