Welshman

Welshman is a demonym used in English to describe a male inhabitant or native of Wales. Historically, it has been the standard masculine form of Welsh nationality, with Welshwoman serving as the feminine counterpart. In contemporary usage, many editors and writers prefer gender-neutral forms such as Welsh person or Welsh people to avoid gender specification.

Etymology and usage: The word Welsh derives from Old English Wealas, meaning foreigner or outsider, and was applied to the Celtic Britons of Wales. The suffix -man forms a masculine ethnonym, yielding Welshman to denote a man from Wales. The term is widely recognized in Britain and in other English-speaking regions and appears in historical documents, literature, and media.

Modern considerations: While still understood, Welshman can be perceived as gendered or outdated in formal or inclusive contexts. In Welsh and international discourse, neutral forms are increasingly preferred. In Welsh, a man from Wales is called a Cymro, a woman is a Cymraes, and the people as a group are Cymry.
