Webex

Webex is a videoconferencing and collaboration platform developed by WebEx Communications and now part of Cisco Systems. It provides services for online meetings, video conferencing, webinars, and team collaboration across desktop and mobile devices.

WebEx originated in 1995, founded by Subrah Iyar and Min Zhu in Santa Clara, California. It grew into a leading provider of on-demand web conferencing. Cisco Systems acquired WebEx in 2007 for about 3.2 billion USD, integrating it into its enterprise collaboration portfolio and renaming the service Cisco Webex.

Webex comprises several product lines, including Webex Meetings for video meetings, Webex Events for webinars, and the Webex app (originating from Webex Teams) for persistent messaging and team collaboration. The platform also provides cloud calling, file sharing, screen sharing, recordings, and transcription, with support for conference room devices and integrations with other software.

Webex is used by enterprises, educational institutions, and government organizations to support remote and hybrid work, training, and large-scale events. It competes with other communication platforms such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet.

Cisco emphasizes security and compliance in Webex, offering features such as data encryption, access controls, compliance certifications, and administrative controls to manage users, devices, and meetings within organization IT policies.
