WebAuthnstyle

WebAuthnstyle is a design and UX reference for presenting WebAuthn-based authentication and registration within web applications. It aims to provide a cohesive, platform-agnostic user experience that respects the security properties of the Web Authentication (WebAuthn) standard while minimizing user confusion across devices.

The scope includes a set of reusable UI components, interaction patterns, and accessibility guidelines that cover the end-to-end flow from initiating a WebAuthn operation to confirming success or handling errors. It is not a replacement for the WebAuthn API, but a companion style guide that helps developers integrate the API in a consistent way.

Core design principles emphasize clarity, minimal friction, explicit user consent, and predictable behavior. The model describes components such as credential option presentation, a primary action to start registration or login, a platform authenticator prompt, and clearly labeled feedback for success, failure, or retries.

Accessibility and security are central. The guide prescribes keyboard navigability, screen reader friendly labels, sufficient contrast, and error messaging that explains the cause and remedy. It also stresses secure contexts, phishing resistance, and clear communication about data collection and usage.

Governance and adoption: WebAuthnstyle is typically maintained as a community-driven reference, with compatibility testing guidelines, cross-browser considerations, and recommended testing coverage. Many design systems and frameworks may adopt it as a default for WebAuthn flows, while allowing platform-specific customization.
