Wandkalender

A Wandkalender, literally “wall calendar,” is a calendar printed on a sheet or bound as a booklet that is designed to be hung on a wall. It typically shows the months of the year, the days and dates, and often includes public holidays, notable observances, and sometimes lunar phases. Many designs also feature decorative imagery or thematic artwork.

Formats range from single-page, year-at-a-glance calendars that display all twelve months on one sheet, to multi-page calendars with one month per page or per spread. Some are vertical, others horizontal. Features may include spaces for notes, photographs or artwork for each month, and special sections for planning, anniversaries, or deadlines.

Historically, wall calendars developed in Europe in the early modern period, evolving from handwritten calendars and printed almanacs. With the spread of printing, large illustrated wall calendars became common in households and offices from the 16th to 19th centuries. In German-speaking regions, Wandkalender were popular as practical planning tools and as decorative objects, often reflecting regional art and cultural themes.

In contemporary contexts, Wandkalender are produced by publishing houses and artists and are often valued for design as well as function. They remain a physical means to organize schedules and track dates, though digital calendars provide parallel functionality. Some calendars are collected for their historical value, vintage aesthetics, or limited-edition artwork, making Wandkalender both practical tools and cultural artifacts.
