WANympäristöt refers to Wide Area Network environments. These are computer networks that span a broad geographic area, typically connecting different local area networks (LANs) across cities, states, or even countries. Unlike LANs, which are confined to a single building or campus, WANs utilize telecommunications circuits to link geographically dispersed locations.

The primary purpose of a WAN is to enable communication and resource sharing between separate sites. Businesses often use WANs to connect their branch offices to a central headquarters, allowing for data transfer, access to shared applications, and unified communication systems. The Internet itself is the largest and most well-known example of a WAN, connecting billions of devices worldwide.

WANs can be implemented using various technologies, including dedicated leased lines, fiber optic cables, satellite links, and cellular networks. The choice of technology depends on factors such as required bandwidth, cost, reliability, and geographic coverage. Common WAN protocols and services include MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching), VPNs (Virtual Private Networks), and Frame Relay. Security is a critical consideration in WAN design, as data travels over public or shared infrastructure. Encryption and other security measures are often employed to protect sensitive information. The management and maintenance of WANs can be complex due to their scale and the involvement of multiple service providers.
