W126

The W126 is the internal designation for the first generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class luxury sedans and coupes produced from 1979 to 1991. It succeeded the W116 and was replaced by the W140. The W126 is widely regarded as a benchmark in automotive engineering and design for its era, known for its build quality, comfort, and advanced features.

Initially launched in September 1979, the W126 offered a range of gasoline and diesel engines. The coupe variants, designated C126, were introduced in 1981. Key features of the W126 included improved aerodynamics, a more spacious interior, and enhanced safety systems for the time, such as optional airbags and seatbelt pre-tensioners. The model underwent a significant facelift in 1985, which brought updated engines, suspension refinements, and a revised exterior appearance with larger bumpers and trim.

The W126 was available in various engine configurations, including inline-six and V8 gasoline engines, as well as naturally aspirated and turbocharged diesel engines. The top-tier models, such as the 560 SEL, were renowned for their performance and luxury appointments. Production ceased in October 1991, with over 890,000 units produced across both sedan and coupe body styles.
