Völkerrechtsverletzung, also known as a violation of international law, refers to the breach of norms, treaties, conventions, or customary rules established within the framework of international law. These violations can occur at the state, intergovernmental, or non-state actor level and may involve actions or omissions that contravene legally binding obligations recognized by the international community.

International law encompasses a broad range of legal principles governing relations between states, such as treaties, customary international law, general principles of law recognized by civilized nations, and decisions of international courts or tribunals. Violations can include acts of aggression, human rights abuses, violations of humanitarian law, breaches of trade agreements, or failures to comply with environmental protections.

The consequences of Völkerrechtsverletzungen depend on the nature and severity of the violation, as well as the mechanisms available for enforcement. States may respond through diplomatic means, such as protests, sanctions, or the suspension of diplomatic relations. In more serious cases, the United Nations Security Council may impose collective measures, including economic sanctions or military action, under Chapter VII of the UN Charter. Additionally, international courts and tribunals, such as the International Court of Justice (ICJ) or the International Criminal Court (ICC), may adjudicate disputes or prosecute individuals for grave violations of international law.

States are generally expected to cooperate in addressing violations, often through multilateral organizations like the UN or regional bodies such as the European Union or the African Union. Non-state actors, including armed groups or corporations, may also face accountability through international mechanisms, particularly for crimes such as genocide, war crimes, or crimes against humanity. The prevention and resolution of Völkerrechtsverletzungen remain central challenges in maintaining global stability and upholding the rule of law on the international stage.
