Vízikapacitás, often translated as water capacity or water holding capacity, refers to the ability of a material, particularly soil, to retain water. This property is crucial for plant growth, as it determines the amount of water available for roots to absorb. Different soil types have varying water capacities due to differences in their composition and structure. For instance, clay soils, with their fine particles and small pore spaces, generally have a higher water capacity than sandy soils, which have larger particles and wider pores.

The water capacity of a soil is influenced by several factors. Organic matter content plays a significant role; organic materials can absorb and hold large amounts of water, thus increasing the soil's overall water capacity. Soil structure, which describes the arrangement of soil particles into aggregates, also affects water retention. Well-aggregated soils tend to have a better balance of pore sizes, allowing for both adequate drainage and water storage. The depth of the soil is another important consideration, as deeper soils can hold more water than shallower ones.
