It can also result from lifestyle factors like excessive salt intake, dehydration, or certain medications.

The primary cause of water retention is an imbalance between the amount of fluid entering and leaving the body's tissues. When fluid intake exceeds output, or when the kidneys are unable to excrete excess fluid efficiently, water retention occurs. This imbalance can lead to increased pressure within the body's tissues, causing them to swell.

Water retention can manifest in several ways, including:

- Peripheral edema, characterized by swelling in the feet, ankles, and legs

- Ascites, the accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity, often causing a bloated or distended abdomen

- Pleural effusion, the buildup of fluid in the pleural space, leading to shortness of breath and chest pain

- Pericardial effusion, the accumulation of fluid around the heart, causing chest pain and difficulty breathing

Treatment for water retention depends on the underlying cause. In some cases, lifestyle modifications, such as reducing salt intake and increasing fluid intake, may help alleviate symptoms. Medications, such as diuretics, may also be prescribed to help the body eliminate excess fluid. In severe cases, medical intervention may be necessary to address the underlying condition causing the water retention.
