Vértároló

Vértároló refers to a blood storage unit or blood bag. These are sterile, flexible containers primarily used for the collection, storage, and transfusion of blood and its components. They are typically made of plastic, most commonly polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which is formulated to be safe for contact with blood and to maintain the viability of blood cells.

The design of a vértároló is critical for its function. Standard blood bags contain a single compartment for whole blood, but many are equipped with multiple satellite bags. These satellite bags allow for the separation of whole blood into its various components, such as red blood cells, platelets, and plasma, through centrifugation. This process enables the use of specific components for different medical treatments, maximizing the utility of donated blood.

Vértárolók are designed to preserve the blood at specific temperatures, usually refrigerated, to prevent bacterial growth and maintain the integrity of the blood products. Anticoagulant solutions, such as citrate-phosphate-dextrose (CPD), are pre-filled within the bags to prevent clotting during storage. The bags are equipped with collection and transfusion ports, often with needles or specialized connectors, to facilitate the safe transfer of blood. Strict sterile techniques are employed during their use to prevent contamination and infection. The shelf life of stored blood components varies depending on the component and the anticoagulant used.
