Vértárolók, also known as blood bags, are medical devices used for the collection, storage, and transfusion of blood and its components. These sterile, flexible containers are typically made of plastic, most commonly polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which is treated with plasticizers to prevent it from becoming brittle. The material is designed to be inert and not interact with the blood, preserving its viability and function.

Each blood bag contains an anticoagulant preservative solution, such as citrate-phosphate-dextrose-adenine (CPDA-1), which prevents the blood from clotting and maintains red blood cell viability during storage. Blood is drawn from a donor directly into the bag through a sterile needle and tubing system. The bag is usually designed with multiple satellite bags attached, allowing for the separation of whole blood into its various components like red blood cells, plasma, platelets, and cryoprecipitate. This fractionation enables targeted therapies for patients.
